Named for Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, it commemorates the first European to set foot on the what is now the U.S. west coast. He explored the West Coast in 1542 including San Diego harbor. This National Monument offers overlooks from cliffs and includes sweeping ocean, harbor and city views. Old Point Loma Lighthouse, a whale overlook (ships also!) and a tidepool area exist on the grounds. The lighthouse is at an elevation of 422' and the park covers 160 acres.
Activities include hiking and sightseeing. Nearby San Diego provides needed facilities. For further information, contact Superintendent, Cabrillo National Monument, 1800 Cabrillo Memorial Drive, San Diego, California 92106-3601 or call (619)-557-5450 for more information.
