An expansive park, it covers 705,500 acres including 287,000 acres of public lands contained within the Catskill Forest Preserve. It is within portions of 4 counties. Nearby, cities such as Kingston and the town of Woodstock are found. The park highlights the Catskill Mountain range with many peaks between 2,500'-4,000' (35 peaks over 3,500'). The park also has numerous reservoirs, lakes and rivers and Belleayre Ski Resort.
Facilities and services are numerous in the region. Activities include camping, biking, fishing, swimming, hiking, skiing and sightseeing. The view from Boulder Rock, Point 6 of Experience # 9 in Fodor's Short Escapes near New York City. This hike is a 4 1/2 mile roundtrip hike. The elevation gain is not large although there are a few steep sections. This hike is centered around the North and South Lake region and the Old Catskill Mountain House.
