Channel Islands National Park

Welcome to the Channel Islands National Park Website of pictures within the World from the Web Home page. Located 70 miles north of Los Angeles, California, this park is reached by travelling north along I-101. From Santa Barbara, it is 30 miles to the south along Rt 101. The park is consists of 5 island chains in the Pacific Ocean. It is reached by boat, either from Ventura or Santa Barbara. There are very litlle services and facilities on the islands themselves.

This national park includes the islands of Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, and Santa Barbara. It contains 249,561 acres amongst the five islands. The Channel Islands are home to over 2,000 terrestrial plants and animals, of which 145 are found nowhere else in the world. Like the Galapagos Islands of South America, isolation has allowed evolution to proceed independently on the islands. Marine life ranges from microscopic plankton to the blue whale, the largest animal to live on earth. Archeological and cultural resources span a period of more than 10,000 years of human habitation. There are three other Channel Islands that are not part of the National Park system.

Activities include camping, kayaking and other sea activities, hiking and sightseeing. For more information contact Superintendent, Channel Islands National Park, 1901 Spinnaker Dr, Ventura, CA 93001 or phone 805-658-5730.
