The wall served as protection against nomadic people. As the pictures show below, it was often constructed on very rugged territory. It seems almost impossible to reach, much less breach. Nevertheless, was not always effective in turning back invaders. It is still an absolute marvel of engineering and construction.
The wall is constructed of earth and stone, faced with brick in the eastern section. It measures 15-30' in the base and tapers to 12' at the top. The height averages 25' except at the watchtowers. The watchtowers are 40' in height and approximately 600' apart.
Today, several hundred miles of the Great Wall are still intact, mostly in the eastern portions.
