The National Forest occupies 1.8 million acres of land. Forest elevations range from 2,600 feet in canyon bottoms to 12,643 feet, the top of Humphrey's Peak. It is the highest point in Arizona and is part of the San Francisco Peaks. There are five distinct environmental areas of this National Forest. These are the Volcanic Highlands, Plateau Country, Mogollon Rim, Desert Canyon Country and Red Rocks Country. Phoenix and Flagstaff are the largest cities in the area. Sedona, in the heart of the National Forest, has plenty of resources and facilities. The area encompassed by the National Forest is often refered to as Sedona and/or Oak Creek Canyon.
