Baseball Hall of Fame

Welcome to the Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame Website of pictures within the World from the Web Home page. Located in upstate New York , this town is where the Baseball Hall of Fame is located.

Cooperstown is a residential village in central New York. It is the seat of Otsego County. Cooperstown is located on the southern shore of Otsego Lake. Route 28 and Route 80 pass through the town. A summer resort, the village also has some light industry. Points of interest include the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum (1939), the Farmers' Museum, the Fenimore Art House (the headquarters for the New York State Historical Association) and an opera company. The population is 2,032 (2000) people. Larger nearby cities are Utica (approximately 40 miles from Cooperstown) and Albany (approximately a 90-mile drive to Cooperstown).

The community was settled in the late 1780s by Judge William Cooper, father of the American novelist James Fenimore Cooper, who spent most of his life here. It was incorporated in 1807. Popular legend credits Abner Doubleday with originating the game of baseball here in 1839, although there is little factual basis to the story.

The Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, National honors baseball's greatest players and presents the history of the sport. Displayed in the part of the building designated as a museum are over 6,000 artifacts, photographs of famous teams and players, paintings and lithographs of early games, and many other baseball souvenirs and items of interest. The museum's library and archives contain the world's most extensive collection of material devoted exclusively to baseball. In the Hall of Fame gallery are bronze plaques commemorating the “immortals” of baseball. Each year elections are held to select new members to the Hall of Fame. Electees are mainly retired players. They also include others who have contributed to the advancement of the game. By 2006 only 286 players had been inducted out of about 18,000 who had played major league baseball. Other inductees include baseball managers, umpires, pioneers of the game, baseball executives, and players from the Negro leagues. Members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America elect players who have retired from playing five years before election, been active in the game during the preceding two decades, and competed in at least ten seasons in the major leagues. The Hall of Fame Committee on Veterans elects players who have been retired from the major leagues for at least 23 years and who competed in at least ten seasons in the major leagues.
