A vast expanse, it occupies 1.7 million acres at an elevation of between 4,050'-8,210'. Temperatures in the monument can exceed 100F in the summer time. It is located between Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Capitol Reef National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park. It is divided into three distinct sections: the Grand Staircase, the Kaiparowits Plateau, and the canyons of the Escalante. The staircase rises over 4000', ending near Byrce Canyon. This is a vast, stark area featuring beautiful canyons, plateaus, rock buttes and spires. Extremely remote, this is a great place to get away from civilization. The two major roads through it are Rt 12 and Rt 89. There are very few facilities in the monument but there are a number of small towns along Rt. 12 that offer limited facilities and resources. This includes the towns of Boulder and Escalante.
Activities include camping, biking, hiking and sightseeing. For further information, contact Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, 180 W. 300 N, Kanab, UT 84741 or call (435)-644-4300.
