Green Mountain National Forest

Welcome to the Green Mountain National Forest Website of pictures within the World from the Web Home page. Located in the southwestern portion of Vermont, this national forest features the Long Trail, Appalachian Trail and numerous ski resorts. There are many small cities and towns near the National Forest that offer full facilities and resources. They include Bennington, Rutland, Middlebury and Wilmington. From Bennington, you can take Rt 9W into the southern portion of the park or Rt 7N along the west portion of the park heading north into the forest.

There are two sections of the forest, the one described here and one just north of Rutland. The park is 350,000 acres with mountain elevations approaching 4000'. Activities include camping, hiking, biking, cross country skiing, downhill skiing, snowmobiling, swimming, boating, fishing and sightseeing. Overlook at Harmon Hill. This hike is along the Appalachian Trail. Take Rt. 9W (Bennington Brattleboro Highway) 5.1 miles from Bennington. Parking lot is on the left. Cross Rt 9 to get to the trailhead. This is a 3.4 mile roundtrip hike with an altitude gain of 965'. This hike is referenced in GORP with a link toward the bottom of this page.
