The park is 106,000 acres. Elevations range from 5,000' to 10,457' and temperatures can reach both hot and cold extremes. Near Lassen Peak the road reaches 8,512 feet, making it the highest road in the Cascade Mountains. It is not unusual for 40 feet of snow to accumulate on the road near Lake Helen. Any trip to Lassen should be planned in advance including contacting the park for availability of open roads and trails. Often, portions of the roads are not open to June or even July. The park offers a large plug dome volcano (Mt Lassen), vistas, geothermal areas (Bumpass Hell), the Devastated Area and numerous lakes. The Volcano had eruptions in 1914-1917, with a huge May 22, 1915 eruption. This created the Devastated Area. Although revegetation has covered much of this area, evidence of this eruption more then 90 years ago is still very apparent. The park contains many other shield and cinder cone volcanoes. The Lassen area is also unique as the Cascades, Sierra and desert all meet in this park.
Activities include hiking, biking, fishing, boating, camping, cross country skiing and sightseeing. The various small towns near the park and park stores offer limited facilities and resources. For further information, contact Lassen Volcanic National Parks, PO Box 100, Mineral, CA 96063 or call (530)-595-4444.
