Pisgah National Forest

Welcome to the Pisgah National Forest Website of pictures within the World from the Web Home page. Located in the western portion of North Carolina, this national forest has the Blue Ridge Parkway travel completely through the park. The Blue Ridge Parkway runs 469 miles, starting at the southern end of Shenandoah National Park and ending in the town of Cherokee, outside of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This parkway or portions of it can be closed during the colder winter months. Asheville, the nearest city, is directly on the western edge of the park. It offers full resources and facilities.

The park is 505,217 acres and features Mt Mitchell, which at 6,684' is the highest peak in the east. Activities include camping, hiking, biking, cross country skiing, swimming, boating, fishing and sightseeing. For more information, contact USDA Forest Service, P.O. From the Blowing Rock Observation Deck, in the northern portion of the park. Take Rt 321 South from the intersection with the Blue Ridge Parkway (in the town of Blowing Rock) and proceed 2 miles. Follow the signs in. That is Grandfather Mountain in the background at 5964'. The Blowing Rock is an immense cliff 4000' in altitude overlooking the Johns River Gorge at 3000'. An interesting Chickasaw legend surrounds the rock.
