The park is 505,217 acres and features Mt Mitchell, which at 6,684' is the highest peak in the east. From the Blowing Rock Observation Deck, in the northern portion of the park. Take Rt 321 South from the intersection with the Blue Ridge Parkway (in the town of Blowing Rock) and proceed 2 miles. Follow the signs in. That is Grandfather Mountain in the background at 5964'. The Blowing Rock is an immense cliff 4000' in altitude overlooking the Johns River Gorge at 3000'. An interesting Chickasaw legend surrounds the rock.
