The National Park Service administers Alcatraz Island as a unit of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA). It is advised to purchase tickets in advance (Alcatraz frequently sells out). Contact Alcatraz Cruises, their website is www.alcatrazcruises.com. The Alcatraz ferry departs from Pier 33, located on The Embarcadero near the intersection of Bay Street. The walk from the boat to the prison involves climbing up about 130 feet.
