The cities size is 174.9 square miles and has a population of 894,943 people (2000). San José, the Gateway to the Bay Area, is the third largest city in California and the 11th largest city in the nation. The metro area is much larger with 7,039,362 people if you include all the Bay Area cities. This includes San Francisco, Oakland, Richmond, Berkeley and Marin County. San Jose is serviced by 3 major airports, Mineta San Jose, San Francisco and Oakland.
San Jose was settled in 1777 and was named El Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe after its patron saint. It was the first state capital, but only during the years 1849-1851. The city remained a small agriculture center upto World War II. After the war, the city has seen tremendous growth.
The city's economy is centered around Silicon Valley, being in both San Jose and many of the surrounding cities. Internet commerce has also taken a strong hold in the city. Orchard crops and wines are also produced in the area.
San Jose is a city whose population exceeds it more famous neighbor, San Francisco. San Jose is home to numerous colleges including San Jose State University. Museums include the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum and Art Gallery, the San Jose Museum of Art and the Tech Museum of Innovation. Gardens include the Municipal Rose Garden and the Japanese Friendship Garden. The Lick Observatory is on Mount Hamilton, 20 miles east of San Jose.
Buffered by average temperate weather lows and highs in January of 40/57F and in July of 56/82F. The city receives slightly less then 14"/year of rain. It is often sunny as some of its suburbs names, Sunnyvale and Pleasanton, attests to.
