South Mountains State Park

Welcome to the South Mountains State Park Website of pictures within the World from the Web Home page. Located in the western portion of North Carolina, this state park has High Shoals Falls. Remote in location, Hickory, the nearest city, is over 40 miles away. From Hickory, get on I-40W to exit 105 (Morganton). Take Rt 18 to SR 1913. From SR 1913 turn left onto Old NC 18. Travel down Old NC 18 to SR 1901. The park is off of SR 1901 on SR 1904. Hickory and Morganton offer full resources and facilities. There is very limited facilities in the park.

Chestnut Knob Overlook at 2,291'. To get there, it is a 4.5 mile roundtrip with 931' elevation gain along the Chestnut Knob Trail.

From the Jacobs Fork River Gorge Overlook, looking at High Shoals Waterfall and surrounding Mtn. 1.8 mile roundtrip from parking lot to Chestnut Knob Trail to overlook with a 800' ascension.

High Shoal Falls, 3.0 mile roundtrip along High Shoal Fall Trail. Although elevation gain is small, there are some steep and rugged sections along the trail. The falls plunge 80 feet.
