The almost 3 million acres of Tonto National Forest borders Phoenix to the south, the Mogollon Rim to the north and the San Carlos and Fort Apache Indian reservations to the east. Elevations in the forest vary from 1,300 to 7,900, resulting in a variety in vegetation. Saguaro Cactus and desert dominate the lower elevations leading upto pine-forested mountains beneath the Mogollon Rim in the upper elevations. This park includes the Salt River Canyon, oft described as the "mini Grand Canyon".
Activities include fishing, hiking, boating, sightseeing and camping. Temperatures can get quite hot and exceed 100F during the summer. There are facilities and lodging in the area. For more information contact Tonto National Forest, 2324 E. McDowell Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85006 or call (602) 225-5200.
