Point Reyes National Seashore

Welcome to the Point Reyes National Seashore Website of pictures within the World from the Web Home page. Located in Western California, this National Seashore is contained within Marin County. It is about a 1 hour drive going north from San Francsico. From San San Francisco, cross the Golden Gate Bridge. Follow 101 to the Sir Francis Drake-San Anselmo exit. Follow Sir Francis Drake through San Anselmo, approximately 21 miles until it dead ends into Highway 1 in Olema. Make a right onto Highway 1 and follow the signs from Olema into the park.

Estuaries, windswept beaches, coastal scrub grasslands, salt and freshwater marshes, coniferous forests including 32,000 acres of coastal wilderness area. The total Seashore area is 70,000 acres of land with 80 miles of coastline. Elevations range from sea level to the 1407' at the top of Mt Whittenberg. The Pt Reyes Lighthouse is at the western tip of Point Reyes and juts out into the Pacific Ocean. This makes it an excellent spot to see the California gray whale from. The best viewings are in January and March. I spotted 3 during a March, 2006 visit. Other portions of the Seashore are excellent locations to see the elephant seal from.

Facilities and resources are limited in the immediate area. Inverness, Inverness Park, Olema and Point Reyes Station are small nearby towns. Activities include hiking, biking, camping, swimming, kayaking and sightseeing. For more information contact Point Reyes National Seashore, 1 Bear Valley Rd, Point Reyes Station, CA 94956 or call (415) 464-5100.
