The park is 777,608 acres with 48 mountain elevations over 4000'. Mt Washington, at 6288' is the highest peak in the northeastern portion of the country. Just as distinctive as its height is the weather on Mt Washington. Claimed by some to have the worst weather in the world, the highest wind velocities ever recorded were 231 mph in 1934.
Activities include camping, hiking, biking, cross country skiing, downhill skiing, snowmobiling, swimming, boating, fishing and sightseeing. There are actual huts on top of some of the mountains that you can stay at. Advance reservations are needed. Old Man of the Mountain, Franconia Notch State Park. It is 48' from the forehead to chin. The Mtn (Cannon Mtn.) is 1200' above Profile Lake and 3200' above sea level. The state park is off of I-93, in the northern portion of the forest.
