The first national park, it was established in 1872. At 2,221,766 acres of land, this park is larger then many states and is the largest National Park in the lower 48 states. This huge park has 5 regions within it appropriately named countries because of their size and diversity. The five countries of Yellowstone are: Mammoth, Roosevelt, Canyon, Geyser and Lake. Each offers diversified activities and scenes within the park. Elevations range from approximately 5,300' at the North Entrance to nearly 12,000' at Eagle's Peak on the park's East boundary (most roads lie at 7,500-8,000 feet). Yellowstone remains among the most geologically active lands on the planet, with steam-spewing geysers, gurgling fumaroles, and frequent earthquakes.
Remote in location, this park offers full facilities both within the park and by the small towns that border on it. From Bozeman, Montana take Rt 191S to Rt 287S. Follow that into the town of West Yellowstone. It is 65 miles from Bozeman to West Yellowstone.
Overall activites include camping, biking, hiking, boating, fishing, wildlife gazing, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and sightseeing. For more information, contact Yellowstone National Park, P.O. Box 168, Yellowstone National Park, WY 82190-0168 or call (307)-344-7381.
